Description
Introduction For geographical and historical reasons, small schools play an important role in many places (Anderson, 2010; Korpinen, 2010; Sigsworth&Solstad, 2001) but staffing small schools in disadvantaged or remote areas is a challenge. Instead of focusing on why teachers leave their work, the Australian researchers Boylan and McSwan (1998) suggested that it would be important to investigate what makes teachers stay and flourish, even in remote areas. In their study, they revealed that coping in a rural school is connected to both job satisfaction and appreciation of the rural lifestyle and environment. White and Reid (2008) proposed that teacher education needs to prepare teachers for the challenges of rural places, where the school is not only the 'heart of its community', but also is 'the focal point of external economic and social influences, as well as political requirements for change and renewal' (p. 2).
